Story
I am a filmmaker looking to make my next documentary on a subject very close to my heart.
The focus of this documentary is suicide, its causes and associated mental health. And it will be based in my local area, Hull & the East Riding.
The film is purely not-for-profit and any excess funds leftover from the crowdfunding or any incidental money made from the film (winnings at festivals, sale of film to a channel, etc) will go directly to a charity associated with suicide and mental health.
The aim of the film being to further open the discussion about these issues, to encourage people of any age, gender, race, religion, having suicidal thoughts to open up about them, to seek help and not go through with the ultimate action...
In 2014, 6,122 suicides were registered in the UK. This corresponds to a suicide rate of 10.8 per 100,000 people (16.8 per 100,000 for men and 5.2 per 100,000 for women). The highest suicide rate in the UK in 2014 was for men aged 45-49 at 26.5 per 100,000. [Source: The Samaritans]
About 23,000 people are using mental health services in Hull, based on a population of approximately 259,000. [October 2016/Source: Hull Daily Mail]
Overall, over the period 2012-2014, 507 (7.0%) of deaths were within the mental and behavioural disorders chapter. There were a further 82 deaths from suicide and undetermined injury. The rate in 1995-97 was higher than for England, and remained higher in 2011-13, at 13.9 per 100,000 in Hull compared to 10.4 per 100,000 in England. [Source: HULL JSNA TOOLKIT RELEASE 6]
