Story
I, along with others are helping the young grandson of a friend of ours. This is one of many fundraising ideas which are being undertaken, in order to provide the best care affordable for this little lad. Please help with any donation, no matter how great or small, Thank You, Andy Price.
Alfie’s Story (As told by his parents) .
Alfie was born a healthy baby on New Year’s Eve in 2015. But on the 9th October 2016 he woke up paralysed. It was to our devastation as parents that Alfie had in fact caught an enterovirus which then produced a disease called Transverse Myelitis;
This is an attack of inflammation (swelling) of the spinal cord. It is caused by the body’s immune system becoming mis-programmed and activating immune cells to attack the healthy myelin covering the nerves in the spine.
Alfie has been in and out of hospital ever since. He is being treated with a new type of steroid, three times a day and sadly will have to be, for the rest of his life. He also has his bloods tested every day to monitor him. He can at any time fall into a coma, so he has been added onto the ambulance flagging system. He has 8 specialists looking after him, dealing with his illness, but he has also recently been diagnosed with autism. We spend a lot of our time at Leeds Children’s Neurologist Unit, St James Hospital, for his spinal and autism treatment and at Seacroft wheelchair and prosthetic services.
Alfie who is a happy 2 yr old, has an older brother and younger sister and though he may look like a healthy little boy, his illness and disability is not visible to them. Next year we are facing the prospect that Alfie will have to have callipers fitted to his legs to assist his spine, in order to try and align it in a straighter position. Also due to the disease and the medication, Alfie’s organs are also being damaged. At this time there is no cure for this condition. The only other case of a child similar in age to Alfie, is in Boston, USA. We can only take every day as a blessing and that he is still with us.
This new vehicle will make everyday getting about much easier, especially to and from the hospital, but in order to be able to get this type of vehicle, we need to save/raise a lot of money, which is why we are appealing for funding help.
I hope this has given you an insight about Alfie and we thank-you all from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and support.
Many thanks
Kolleen and Nick. Alfie’s Mum & Dad.
