African Maths Initiative (AMI) is a Kenyan NGO formed by mathematicians and mathematics educators who are working to create a stronger mathematical community and culture of mathematics across Africa. Training in mathematics hugely broadens the opportunities available to Africans, giving the possibility of breaking them out of careers in agriculture or small-scale businesses and pursuing careers that are will make Africa more prosperous and sustainable.
I had the fortune of working alongside AMI in Kenya at a maths camp this summer, and I have been so impressed by their work that I have decided to run and hike 25 km to raise money to support their work.
AMI was formed in 2011 by lecturers and postgraduate students at Maseno University in response to the success of the Maseno Maths Camp. The Camp was first held in 2010 to enable secondary school students to experience maths in an enjoyable and relevant way. As there was so much enthusiasm for learning maths generated by the camp, AMI was conceived to help identify, improve and scale up African initiatives in the mathematical sciences. Maths camps have been held for the past eight years in several locations around Kenya and have spread to Ghana, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
Seeing the real opportunities brought to the Kenyan speakers and graduates who have been involved with AMI because of having experience in mathematics is incredible. Some of the children who have been inspired to study maths by AMI's projects are now returning to teach maths at the maths camps. For instance, one of the friends I made had himself been recruited to one of the first AMI maths camp before going on to study maths at university. He now works as a software engineer with AMI.
However, AMI needs funds in order to fund maths camps and to pay its staff to carry out research, software development and teaching. Furthermore it hopes to follow-up on the participants of the maths camp and create maths clubs which will run throughout the year and inspire many more students.
The costs of hosting a student at a maths camp is £20 per day including accommodation, food and transportation across the country.
Please donate generously to help support a student at a camp. Suggested donation is £20 to support a child for a day.
