    Story

Malawi's President, Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, has declared State Of Disaster in districts affected by recent devastating floods. So far, 28 people have died and 124 injuries have been reported. A total of 45,312 households (approximately 226,560 people) have been severely affected due to collapsed houses and damaged roads and bridges. https://malawi24.com/2019/03/10/malawi-floods-death-toll-hits-28/

I am a teacher at Hillview International School in BCA, Limbe, which is a private school 55km north of Chikwawa. My homeroom class consists of 15 students, aged between 12 and 14 years old. My class had planned their annual weekend getaway to Chikwawa on the weekend 22-24 March, which will now include serious charitable efforts to help those affected. Together with Brenda Thompson-Surtee, who is involved in local politics in the Chikwawa District, we have identified a Primary School where my class will help on Saturday 22 March, at which point we will also hand over any donations we have raised.

Some of my family lives overseas and they have been asking how they can help. I decided to set up this page for people who used to live in Malawi and my friends and family around the world who want to support Malawians in this devastating time of need. Every penny raised will go to children in Chikwawa to help rebuild their lives.

We raised nearly £2000 from friends, family, and you lovely, kind-hearted people on justgiving.com It was decided that the money would help two projects, one of which was Njereza School. Njereza has about 1100 students, and the school feeds each student daily. The feeding centre was destroyed in the floods and the money has been used to rebuild the shelter. Under the guidance of our friends, Mrs Brenda Thomson-Surtee and Courtney Surtee, the shelter is being built and should be completed this week. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously!
