Contact Improvisation India is a nomadic community of passionate dancers and practitioners. Over the period of 3 years our community has been facilitating workshops across India, organizing international events, performing, and sharing Contact Improvisation with the focus on movement experimentation as inspired by the pioneers of the form.

Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance form focused on the exploration of the physics of movement, improvised interaction with others, and working with principles such as momentum, inertia, and gravity. As a dance form, CI has been brought to India by Western teachers around 10 years ago and since then we have been dedicated in deepening our experience and knowledge of the form.

By sharing CI in India we have opposed many norms ingrained in the society such as the touch taboo, separation of gender, lack of freedom in movement, etc. This came with many challenges. Often we had no resources, were rejected by local dance studios and not recognized as capable teachers, and even faced intervention from local authorities who were suspicious of this unknown practice. Only with persistence and passion we managed to continue practicing and sharing CI and the joy of movement.

From individual dancers to becoming a group of dedicated practitioners, we have come a long way and now we plan to make a big step towards growing as an organisation - to organize the first Indian Contact Improvisation Festival in 2020.

Our dream is to reach out to the local community as widely as possible and spread the understanding of the form, but also to achieve a stronger recognition as local CI facilitators and gain more credibility as an organisation to continue our work in the future. We also passionately believe that CI is a movement journey that should be available for every individual, and thus we plan to offer scholarships for those in need of financial support.

By supporting our campaign you will help our community to gather resources necessary to secure the space, support the administrative process, cover some of the teacher fees and scholarship costs, and other initial expenses related to creating a festival. But more importantly, you will help a group of passionate artists and movers to continue working, sharing, impacting, and building a wider community, no matter the obstacles.
