    Story

    Healthcare Outreach Program

    International Volunteers Head Quarters (IVHQ)

Hi, my name is Debbie Hull – could you support me on this trip?

It’s been on my bucket list since I was 15 – and trust me, that’s a lot of years 😊 so the time and opportunity has finally come for me to go for it!!

I want to take my nursing and teaching qualifications, along with my life experiences and skills, to a place where I can try and help improve and positively impact the lives of some of the most economically disadvantaged people in the world. So, I am off to India as a volunteer on a Healthcare Outreach program.

IVHQ is the world’s most experienced volunteer travel organisation and has supported over 80,000 volunteers to 40+ countries since 2007.

For more information see … https://www.volunteerhq.org/

I will be working under the guidance of local healthcare leaders to engage local community members in health practices and treatments that will be beneficial to their long-term health and well being. India’s health sector has been steadily improving but many people living in the poorer communities do not regularly access healthcare facilities. This is often due to a lack of understanding and trust in the local healthcare services. The healthcare outreach project aims to work within these communities to promote basic practices and preventative health and wellness initiatives.

At this present time, I do not know exactly what my role will involve but the local volunteer organisers take time and care to place volunteers in areas that will best utilize their experience and skill base. What I do know, however, is that the tasks I may be asked to work on include: -

    1) Health Education both in the slum outreach clinics and during routine check-ups in hospital on issues such as nutrition, health, and sanitation

2). Teaching local staff in emergency response and resuscitation

    3) Health care screening and preventative medicine. Assist local doctors and nurses with such as taking the height, weight and blood pressure measurements of patients and communities.

4). Working in minor injury and medical clinics in the slums offering treatment for injuries and illnesses.

I am appealing for funding to help support me financially. As a volunteer, I will not be earning a wage whilst I’m away and there are set costs that need to be met in order for me to take part in this amazing project. I am saving hard, but would appreciate greatly, any sponsorship contributions.

This is such an amazing worthwhile opportunity for which I have been working towards for near on 36 years. It will allow me to put to good use my human compassion, knowledge and expertise in a place where it will have the greatest impact. An opportunity for me to experience and grow both professionally and personally.

    Thank You

    My kindest wishes

    Debbie

Hi I'm just back from a brief visit to India. My destination for my voluntary work has changed. I'm now off to Delhi instead of Dharamsala due to project issues but will be embarking on the same work. Instead of isolated hilltop communities, I'll be working along side local medics in the slums of New Delhi. Taking basic health screening and care to people who are not able, for whatever reason, to access healthcare. Please give freely. Could do with some theatre scrubs too if anybody has any going spare!!!
