    Story

Bukit Lawang Trust is a Non-Profit organisation based in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra, Indonesia. It was founded after the devastating flood wiped out the village of Bukit Lawang in November 2003. It was in the late evening, the massive flood hit the village and killed many people. Described by witnesses as a tidal wave, the water was over 10 meters high, as it came crashing down the hills, wiping out everything in its path.

Bukit Lawang is located next to the magnificent Leuser Ecosystem which is the last place on earth to find tigers, elephants, rhinos and orangutans living together in the wild. We believe that poverty reduction greatly improves conservation efforts and the chances of success, so we work with local communities to improve education and social enterprise to help protect this precious area of the earth. The global green belt is the earth's lungs and we believe we should protect it for future generations.

The ethos of the Trust is to empower people, so that the community is involved in every aspect of our projects.

We believe in small direct aid projects, where the funds go directly to the people who need them, and are not wasted on administration. We try to minimise the amount of money changing hands, and encourage volunteering. We are run by volunteers in the UK, only our Indonesian staff are paid a salary. We currently employ seven local staff.

We believe education is the best route out of poverty and through education young people are empowered to take control of their own future, and look for better jobs and begin better businesses, and are therefore better equipped for life.

    Eco-Brick Bed Challenge

Indonesia is one of the worlds biggest plastic polluters, a country where a river is no longer a river due to the amount of plastic on its surface. Plastic plagues an issue all throughout the country! Recycling in Indonesia is a costly process and one many families cannot afford. So we need to come up with an option other than burning plastic to get it out of the home. Eco Bricks are a perfect solution. https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-asia-43845632/the-plastic-choking-indonesian-rivers

If we can build one Eco Brick Bed it will be monumental for the trust and the local community. As it will be built by locals it engages them on a mass scale and shows them what they can do in there own homes with this waste!!

What We Need & What You Get

We need £100 to build 5 Eco Brick Beds, anything more means we can give the Local Ladies involved in the litter picking more money for there work and what a Xmas / New Year present that would be! Or even build more beds for the community!! If we can even build one bed at £20 that would be incredible!

All of that £20 is headed to the locals involved in the project. Litter Pickers that collect the plastic bottles and fill the bottles with plastic waste, the people building the beds and purchasing the glue and rope to keep the structure of the beds.

If we cannot get to the £100 for 5 Beds, even if it is £20 then we can still build a bed! All money will still head to the local community!
