Story
Global ENT outreach saves lives and prevents avoidable deafness from ear disease for those affected by poverty and lack of care so they can reach their full human potential. GEO has worked in 27 countries across the globe, from setting up temporal bone courses to train local ENT surgeons the complex anatomy of the temporal bone in a simulated setting (one of the key ways to learn these advanced surgical skills), to providing surgical humanitarian missions to train and assist with performing 2,400 surgeries in countries across the globe. One of the hospitals they work with is in Mekelle, Ethopia, where there are UK doctors who travel to Ethiopia twice a year on training missions to train local ENT residents, provide teaching programmes, set up a temporal bone laboratory, and assist with complex operations which otherwise would not be possible. The facilities that we have in the UK to assess ear disease and deafness include working closely with an audiologist in order to assess the degree and type of hearing loss to aid diagnosis and advise on treatment options. There is no audiology department or trained audiologists in Mekele and therefore the residents and ENT surgeons operate there without this facility making diagnosis and counselling patients on the likely outcome of surgery difficult. I am running the ABP Marathon in Southampton in order to raise money for this amazing cause and to provide a trained audiologist, to teach the local ENT residents and nurses in Mekele how to perform an audiogram, and tympanometry (another key part of hearing assessment), as well as fit basic hearing aids for the local population. Allieviating deafness has huge implications in this community, preventing social isolation and allowing economic security through being able to work again. Please help me support this amazing cause.
