In exactly a month, I will be heading off to Peru to help teach art to young children at the Light and Leadership Initiative.

The Light and Leadership initiative provides supplementary educational programs to young children and women in Peru. The charity is based in Huaycan, a shanty town in the suburbs of Lima. LLI focuses on improving the general quality of life in Huaycan by empowering locals through classes targeted at improving important skills, (such as: computing, the ability to speak English, entrepreneurial skills etc), to help them gain a secure job and way of life.

LLI's work is necessary in Peru, a country which was ranked the worst performing country in terms of student performance, (PISA, 2012). Inequality is a problem deeply rooted in Peruvian culture. LLI's community based-approach is an effective solution to this issue, as it's small-scale allows the charity to respond to the unique social issues which exist in Huaycan.

I would be really grateful for a small donation to help fund my placement as an art teacher in this charity. Part of the donations will also go to the charity itself, to help buy supplies and keep the classes running. Your support would not just help me cover basic costs during my placement, it would also aid the charity itself to continue its essential welfare work.
