    Story

esmai rose was born born 40 wks +3 by emergency c section .
esmai was born alive covered in meconium had a heart rate but no respiratory effort so resuscitation was started. At 12 minutes old she went into seizure and drs struggled to control it she was put on a ventilator and transferred to the nicu at poole hospital.Tuesday 24th she was transferred as an emergency for more specialized treatment with an intensive care team to southampton nicu unit. An mri and lots of tests were preformed devastating news she had extensive brain damage and specifically to the part of the brain that controlled her breathing, we were told she had to breathe on her own if she could do that she would stand a chance but would suffer significant disabilities. If she couldn't come omthen we would have to talk about what was best for esmai we knew what that meant .within 48hrs she was breathing herself, crying , moving swallowing acting like a Newborn baby 2md mri was done her brain damage was worse the pons in her brain has almost disappeared , chunks of white matter disappeared and her basal ganglia is shrinking no diagnosis and no treatment she was given 6 months
they believed gradually she would start to lose her functions swallow , sight, hearing , and tragically her breathing.
A third mri showed that all the damage was still there but hadn't got any worse so for now have given us the diagnosis of hypoxic ischemic encethalopy grade 3 (severe brain damage)
With the hie she also has
    Epliepsy
    Dystonia
    Bilateral spasticty cerebal palsy
    A cortical vison impairment
Infantile spasms a rare form of epilepsy
She is nil by mouth and has a peg to feed her
Esmai is immobile, unable to sit or roll or hold her head or grasp and hold toys her life will be faced with many challenges and to make it more comfortable she requires equipment not funded by the nhs especially at the moment a comfy chair to sit in when not in her seating system a specialised bed to keep her safe at night
