Story
St Mary’s Primary School currently has a nurture room acting as a dedicated space offering specialised, focused intervention to address barriers to learning and development such as social, emotional or academic difficulties. The room and it’s facilities are accessed by a large number of the school‘s staff and children for many reasons.
In order to enhance the current space I’d like to raise funds to enable the purchase of new resources for this unique and special place.
To help people understand a bit why this nurture room project is so important to me, I’m going to share some things about myself that most people don’t know, I don’t want this to turn into a misery memoir but I think a bit of background is important.
In some ways as a child I was very lucky- I went to a good school in a nice area, I was bright, and had an outwardly nice home, but I also had a lot of secrets, things that I wasn’t allowed to tell people about. No one knew what was happening at home, I was too afraid to ask for help from my teachers, I had no “safe space” at home or at school. I’m very lucky to have now found peace in my life; whilst I thought I would always be broken I met my husband and we made a real home and family together. When I had my children, it was like someone turned all the lights on. I‘m sharing this story to show how important a safe and trusted environment can be, it took me a long time to find mine, I know it could have made a huge and vital difference to me as a child. The nurture room environment doesnt just provide a secure space for children like I was though, the school‘s nurture room is used to help children develop in numerous ways, academically, emotionally and socially, the room and its specialist staff can help children with additional needs, with speech and language difficulties, or just to act as a peaceful, quiet place for mindfulness.
I want to make what is already a wonderful and essential space even more effective for the many children who do, and will continue to use it for years to come.
I have offered to paint a number of bespoke murals for the room and to repurpose and upcycle the existing furniture, but funds raised would enable us to purchase some new furniture and resources which will add to the functionality and therefore the enrichment potential of the room.
If you’ve got this far, thank you so much for reading and I hope doing so has given you some insight into why this project has become so important to me and how it has the potential to help a large number of the children at St Mary’s.
Thankyou for your support.
Thankyou
