Weʼve raised £745 to Allow me to Nurse & Volunteer in Cambodia !

Funded on Saturday, 8th June 2019

Don't have time to donate right now?

    Story

Hello, my name is Georgia Rodway and I’m currently a second year Adult Nursing student at Teesside University. I’ve been given the amazing opportunity along with another 15 Student Nurses to travel to Cambodia to represent the charity Transform Healthcare Cambodia. This trip will allow me help educate and Nurse in Battambang Hospital for 2 weeks in July 2019. This trip will be classed as a placement and counts as part of my nursing degree, but is unfortunately is not funded by Teesside University, so i'm having to unfortunately self fund to be able to go. So even if you can’t donate could you please share ! :-)

This will be an amazing learning experience for me to be able to see a third world healthcare system and how it compares to our NHS Healthcare System which we are all guilty of taking advantage off. I feel the experience will really help sculpt and grow me as a person and i'm hoping it will make me into a well rounded resilient Nurse when i qualify. I feel as a nurse World Health is extremely important as we are all guilty of taking advantage of everyday things that allow us to live healthy long lives. Additionally, i feel its important for me experience alternative cultures and learn to understand and adapt to different cultures as this is something we see daily in nursing and can sometimes present as a barrier to effective healthcare.

To give you a small background on Cambodia, it is a small country in south east of Asia. However, on April 17, 1975, a dictator named Pol Pot led a group of forces into the Cambodian city of Phnom Penh, killing almost 2 million people over a four year period. All intellectuals and educated people were purposely killed, as a result their health care system was entirely destroyed. It is estimated that only ten doctors survived. They have since began rebuilding their cities, however this is very slow and as a result they have a very poor healthcare system.

The Charity Transform Healthcare Cambodia that i will be travelling with is a UK based charity which was established in with the help of government funding in 2011 to relieve sickness and to promote and protect good health for the benefit of the public. They do this be educating the health care workers on the prevention of diseases and hygiene, providing the hospital with the equipment as well as financial support for such other health care related services. And we students will be going to volunteer and support the charity.

As said above, i'm expected to find the funds my self for this trip. Student nurses work 40 hours per week unpaid which means we really struggle to fit paid work around our studies, placement and assignment writing. Although i'm putting every penny i have spare to this trip i'm still no where near at the target i need to be able to go on this life changing trip. So any donation is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading. Please share the word!
