Story
Length of the Lakes
In 2020 I hope to take part in an expedition to the Himalayas where we will study the effects of climate change, looking at glacial retreat, air purity and monitoring the weather at one of the highest stations in the world.
To begin fundraising for the expedition I have set myself the challenge (at the age of 16) of walking the full 'length of the lakes' – backpacking, solo and unsupported, 80 km with over 6000m of ascent.
I will start at Gawthwaite on the Southern boundary of the Lake District National Park. The route will initially involve walking along part of the Cumbria way to Torver and then work it's way over the following peaks:
• Old Man of Coniston
• Swirl How
• Pike of Blisco
• Crinkle Crags
• Bow Fell
• Scafell Pike
• Great Gable
• Dale head
• Maiden Moor
• Catbells
• Skiddaw
• Sale How
• High Pike
I will be travelling alone, without any support, carrying all my own equipment including tent, food and sleeping bag. I am very much looking forward to the expedition after finishing my GCSE exams and hope that you will be willing to sponsor me so I can raise money for the expedition being run by The British Exploring Society in 2020.
The British Exploring Society is a unique youth development charity which uses expeditions as a vehicle to advance the education of young people by developing their confidence, teamwork, leadership and spirit of adventure and exploration.
The expedition has a strong emphasis on mountain climbing and exploration together with scientific data recording and interpretation of that natural environment. As an Explorer, Maisie will take on the journey of a lifetime trekking in the world’s highest mountain range over peaks as high as 5800m, experiencing the traditional culture of the region and taking part in a wide range of scientific fieldwork, from carrying out lake surveys to measuring glacial retreat levels.

5 years agoHi guys, just letting you all know that I have successfully completed the full "length of the lakes". I left late evening on Wednesday 19th and finished in the afternoon on Sunday 23rd. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole challenge and the weather was (mostly) fantastic! Luckily I managed to only come home with 2 blisters and a much lighter rucksack (it was 20kg when I left). Thank you so much to everyone that has generously donated towards my fundraising goal- it's very much appreciated!!! In total, I now have £1,825 towards my £5000 goal.
