Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

From May 29th to June 9th 2012 I will be cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats. I have always enjoyed a physical challenge, often involving quite a substantial amount of pain! This time I've managed to convince three other crazy fools to join in. Tjark Plat, my colleague here at Wild Futures' Monkey Sanctuary, Simon Gilmour a fellow cycling enthusiast (the older guys) and Declan Cooper a former sanctuary volunteer (the wipper snapper).

Please read on to find out why we're going to put ourselves through this.........................!

The Monkey Sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates monkeys, the majority of which have been rescued from the pet trade. Currently we have 28 monkeys, however we have recently been asked to take on an additional group of 8. In order to do so we need to move our Barbary Macaques to a new enclosure. The outside enclosure has been constructed, however we will need to build an indoor enclosure adjacent to this enclosure.

The room is essential as it will provide heating for the monkeys, a key requirement, as in the wild our monkeys would be used to a warm climate. The room will also be of a bespoke design with many other benefits, for example it will have different compartments which would aid in a situation should a monkey become sick. It will aid the socialisation process for any young monkeys that we take on and provide areas for the existing Barbary Macaques Donkey, Chico and Mario to have their own space.

If we are unable to obtain funding for this new room we will be limited on the number of monkeys that we can re-home. Currently it is estimated that there are 5000 monkeys being kept as pets in the UK. Evidence shows that this number is increasing. Unfortunately it is impossible to be able to keep a monkey as a pet and give it the care, nutrition and environment it deserves. The demand for The Monkey Sanctuary to be able to rescue and rehabilitate monkeys in the UK is increasing monthly.

Wild Futures is working hard towards the day when all monkeys are free from the threat of the pet trade, free from malnutrition, mental, physical and emotional suffering.

Thank you for making a difference.
