We support people with complex disabilities to communicate and experience the world

Story

Hi, thanks so much for being here.

UPDATE:

Thanks so much for your donations, we still need more, so if you haven't given yet, anything would be appreciated. It certainly was a challenging weekend!
Friday was the toughest day for all the cyclists. We encountered heavy traffic cycling through South London; particularly dicey on the tandem! We were then faced with some challenging hill climbs, narrow and bumpy roads and steep descents with some sharp turns - again, not ideal on a tandem!

After a 4am finish into Dieppe port on Saturday morning, I (Denise) was hit with a sick bug, in addition to tiredness from the previous day. Seriously dehydrated, exhausted from no sleep and no food, I was wiped out and unable to ride Saturday - frustrating for all involved. Supported by the fantastic team, I was force-fed energy drinks and carbs Sunday morning. Graham and I managed to cycle the final 20 miles into Paris, leading the pack in for the final 4 mile convoy past the Arc De Triomphe and Eiffel Tower, to a fantastic crowd!
Thanks so much for everyone's support.
Denise and Graham.

My cousin, Graham, and I will be tandem cycling from London to Paris on August 21st.

We'll be covering nearly 200 miles (322kms) over 3 days, and there are some pretty challenging hills en route, so we need all the support we can get!

About Graham:
Graham Hicks was born blind, deaf by the age of six and has been riding tandem since his late teens. The cause of his disability is still unknown but believed to be the result of a rare degenerative genetic condition. In common with many deafblind people Graham also has impaired balance, which makes the tandem ride particularly demanding.

Graham's life has been a challenge and an experience that few people in this world have shared. In spite of this, and sometimes spurred on by it, Graham has spent his life proving that profoundly disabled people can make a valuable and unforgettable contribution to society.

Among his many achievements Graham has:

- Achieved three successive Guinness World Records: for jet-skiing (Lands End to the Scilly Isles, and the Holland to England North Sea Crossing) and quad biking: (the most recent being the speed record of 133mph at RAF Wittering).

- Run his own cycle sales and repair shop

- A former Young Deaf Achiever and winner of the 2003 Variety Club Award for Courage in Sport

- He is also in the early planning stage for an attempt on the World Record for the fastest crossing of the English Channel by jetski.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Sense - National Deafblind and Rubella Association gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor us now!
