This project was thought up by several like minded friends from the Gwent Dragons rugby team, on their return from voluntary work in Nairobi last summer. Following months of phone calls, e-mails, headaches and general hard work, our itinerary is ready!

Starting on the 5th of June 2010, 15 players, coaches, physiotherapists and friends will begin this gruelling challenge around Wales (see itinerary at www.cyclechallengewales.co.uk). Passing through some of the most beautiful scenery in the World will be of little consolation to our tired bodies. Our focus will be solely on the 10 metres of tarmac in front of our noses!

It is for this reason that we hope you find it in your heart to give generously to our fund. The money will not only help hundreds of deprived children in Kenya, but will also benefit the communities we visit along our route.

 

Spring Valley Primary School, Nairobi

Spring Valley was established as a school for children from difficult backgrounds some 20 years ago. It accommodates pupils who may have been directly or indirectly affected by amongst other things, AIDS, drug abuse and malnutrition.

Its main objective is to offer two square meals a day to its pupils (a privilege that cannot be taken for granted in large areas of Nairobi). It also offers an excellent standard of free schooling to all its pupils, and an escape from the difficulties attached to home life.

During a trip to the country in the summer of 2009, several players and staff of the Newport Gwent Dragons rugby squad, assisted in the construction of a new toilet and shower block on the grounds.

Our aim this year is to raise a substantial sum of money to fund the building of an extension to the school. This will help to swell the number of pupils attending from the current 220, and accommodate more of the thousands of local children who desperately require food and education.

 

Air Ambulance Wales

Wales Air Ambulance is a registered charity providing a vital service through emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries.
Launched on St David’s Day in 2001, the three red helicopters stationed in Mid, North and South Wales respond to around 1500 emergencies a year, saving countless lives across Wales. From mountain tops to back gardens, the helicopters can be anywhere in Wales within just 20 minutes. 
Owing to the diversity of the landscape in Wales, the ‘helimed’ service is vital for reaching remote rural areas as well as busy towns and cities when time really matters. 
It is widely believed that a patient’s chances of survival and early recovery are significantly increased if they receive the right care within the first hour, otherwise known as the ‘Golden Hour’. The fast response times of the Air Ambulance Crews and their ability to reach such difficult locations increases the chances of a patient receiving definitive care within the this crucial hour. 
The charitable service does not receive direct funding from central government. Additionally, due to its role as an emergency service, it also fails to qualify for National Lottery Funding. Wales Air Ambulance is therefore funded by the people of Wales, relying on public support to raise £5 million a year to keep their helicopters flying. 

 

Velindre Cancer Hospital, Cardiff

Velindre Cancer Centre is the largest non - surgical cancer Hospital in Wales providing Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and other specialised anti-cancer treatments for over half the people of Wales. We have been providing support and care to cancer patients in South Wales for over 50 years. Every possible effort is made to ensure that each visit to Velindre is as comfortable as possible, and our experienced staff aim to provide high quality care to patients and their families. Each year Velindre Cancer Centre provides care, treatment and support for over 110,000 out patients and day cases.

It is this commitment to high quality care which means that Velindre is widely regarded as being a Centre of Excellence. We have a fully integrated award winning Therapies team which includes Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Speech and Language Therapy, Lymphoedema and Complementary Therapies. Velindre Cancer Centre is the first Cancer Centre in Europe to have a totally integrated service for patients in most need – our Active Support Unit provides the highest standards of care and quality support to palliative care cancer patients.

More people in Wales survive cancer now than ever before thanks to early detection and better treatments. It is estimated that by 2015 there will be a 30% increase in the most common forms of cancer in Wales; we are determined to raise the money necessary to enable us to meet these new challenges.

 

Ty Gobaith Children's Hospice, North Wales

Hope House Children’s Hospices – Hope House in Oswestry and Tŷ Gobaith in Conwy - provide specialist nursing care in addition to practical and emotional support to terminally ill and life limited children and young people. We also believe our dedicated care and support should extend to the whole family from diagnosis, throughout the lifetime of the child and beyond.
Our comprehensive professional bereavement and counselling service is offered to families who use the hospices and also throughout Shropshire, Cheshire and North and Mid Wales to those who have lost a child in whatever circumstances. We also offer support to all children and young people who have lost someone close to them in traumatic situations.
It costs in the region of £4 million a year to maintain all of our hospice services and we receive very little income from statutory bodies. Your support is vital, without you it would not be possible to provide the care that our children, young people and families so desperately need
