At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

In November I completed the Coast to Coast Challenge, I cycled 500km across Costa Rica. Im not sure what was harder the fund-raising or the challenge its self but the support I have had was amazing and will make a real difference to people living with dementia. There is still time to donate to this vital cause... Thank you for your support.

My story:

On Boxing Day 2011 my Dad, Chris George died of Alzheimer's at the age of 61. My Mum had cared for him for over a decade. I lost my Granddad, Eddie George to the same disease in 2007. I am cycling across Costa Rica in their memory and in support of the carers of people with Dementia.

One in three people over the age of 65 are diagnosed with dementia but this is not just a disease that affects the old, my dad was 52 when he was diagnosed but symptoms started to show when he was 47. With two thirds of sufferers being cared for at home, the pressure on the carer is overwhelming. This is often the sufferer's husband, wife, son or daughter with no training or support and the added pain of watching a loved one in distress.

There is currently no formal program for carers of people with Dementia. With your support the Alzheimer's Society can set up the 'Live Well' program to help these family carers.

I hope to raise at least £4000 for the charity but the more I raise the more people The Alzheimer's Society can help. I will be cycling 500km across the challenging terrain in Costa Rica with colleagues from The Lloyds Banking Group (inc Halifax) between 9th and 16th November 2013.
