Story
Joff and Joy set off from Halifax in Nova Scotia in May 2009 to cycle more than 15,000 miles through 15 different countries for 18 months to raise money for boys who, by the age of 8, can no longer ride a bike!
IT MUST BE NOTED THAT 100% OF THE MONEY RAISED BY THE PAIR GO TO ACTIONDUCHENNE.
They intended pedalling their bikes through the eastern part of Canada, across the States, and then south, through Mexico and all of Central America. Then, they'll fly to Ecuador from Panama City. From here, they'll pedal down the western side of South America, visiting Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, before ending up in Ushuaia, in southern Patagonia. Tired...
(If you'd like to follow Joy and Joff, or want to know more about the route, have a look at their website; http://www.cycletheamericas.org/ )
Having said all that....... after riding 6,700 miles and seeing the poverty and squalor at every turn in Mexico, they decided to stop, learn about the country some more and help out. They are currently volunteering at Hijos de la luna, in Oaxaca (www.hijosdelaluna-en.org) and they love it. Pease read their blog, laugh as requested, and donate to Actionduchenne if you would like to. If it wasn't for trademark reasons in the UK, I would use the phrase 'every little counts.'
Thank you.
Actionduchenne doesn't publicise itself as much as some, because it only has a small budget and it is spent directly on research. From what the pair understand, Duchenne's limited budget is partly a function of a limited public awareness of the disease, and partly a result of being overshadowed by more 'newsworthy' illnesses like Cystic Fibrosis, which currently has 10 times the amount of research being conducted on it. - Please help them to raise the level of awareness and funding of research into this terrible disease.
It is a sad fact that in Britain, boys with this illness cannot expect to live much beyond their 20th birthday.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THIS CHARITY.
