SOS Children’s Villages provides family homes for children who have no one else to care for them. Over 60,000 orphaned or abandoned children are currently cared for by SOS mothers in clusters of family homes in more than 450 of our unique children’s villages, in 123 countries around the world. A further million benefit from SOS outreach programmes, which include nurseries, schools, vocational training in addition to medical and community development centres. Our Charities

We have two Just Giving pages set up for our chosen charities - one for Julia's House (www.justgiving.com/cyclingnomads1) and this one for SOS Children’s Villages as there are no facilities set up a donation page that organises money to be sent to both charities. We would like to raise £10,000 for each charity.

Therefore we would like to ask you to take the time to check both sites and decide which charity you would like your sponsorship to go towards.

Who we are

Kelly Jordan, a local teacher at Baden-Powell and St. Peter’s Middle school in Poole and David Whiddon, a first aid and sea survival trainer for the RNLI will take to the roads in November 2008.

What we plan to achieve

We will be setting off on a journey of a lifetime to raise funds for a local charity, Julia’s House - a local Dorset children's hospice and the international charity, SOS Children’s Villages. We are planning on cycling approximately 15,000 miles. Our journey will be starting in Ushuaia, at the Southern tip of Argentina in South America and we plan to cycle to Alaska, the extreme Northwest portion of the North American continent.

We anticipate that we will be on the road for up to 2 years, facing extreme weather conditions and the challenging terrain that the American continent has to offer. We plan to cycle the world’s driest desert and along the high altitude mountain regions of the Andes.

By doing the trip by bicycle we are hoping it will bring us closer to the environment and help us learn about the ever changing world that we live in. Travelling by bike will help us to leave a minimal impact upon the environment.

Along the way, we will be experiencing new cultures and places, and with this knowledge we plan to create educational links between local and international schools. We want to help children understand the links between their own lives and that of other people by giving talks in schools pre-departure and whilst en-route. Along the way we aim to create educational packs for schools to use in order to bring in a global perspective into the classroom.

We are hoping to spend time visiting the SOS Children’s Villages along the way to find out first hand how the money we raise will be used.

To learn a bit more about our trip, get in contact or keep track of where we are  - why not visit our website: www.cyclingnomads.com

Thank you  so much for supporting us - we would love you to add a comment for us to read on this site. Perhaps you could also include which country you are from too.

See you on the road...
