I'm running for Myeloma UK in an effort to increase the number of people (and ultimately the different mix of genes that people are made up of) that are represented on the UK bone marrow database. With more of us represented it will be that much easier to find a suitably matched donor should anybody find themselves in the desperate position of requiring bone marrow.
Bone marrow is hard to come by and almost exclusively unique to an individual, and so in order to find a match you have to be genetically similar. The difficult part is if you don't find a match in your immediate family the chances of finding a donor are drastically reduced, even more so if your parents are from different parts of the world.
I first became involved with the charity at the Notting Hill Carnival a few years ago, when a seemingly straight forward tent, cleverly disguised as a Caribbean food stall, enticed me over with a delicious combination of rice n' peas. In between mouthfuls they explained how simple the process was and the importance of raising awareness in order to boost the number of represented bone marrow types specific to people of different genetic backgrounds, that make up the population of the UK.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Myeloma UK will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now!
Many thanks for your support.
