My story

"Oh goody!" I can hear you thinking it now. "Another chance to hand over cash in return for the pleasure of knowing how much Dan will be hurting for the next several months. That's worth a tenner of my money."

I'm supporting maggie's, a cancer caring charity, for the 2009 London Marathon. Why? Because of my lovely cousin, Teresa.

Teresa had peritoneal cancer last year and almost died. She's a very strong-willed person and knew she'd be mentally tough enough to go through the chemotherapy and all its physical consequences. Her husband and daughter found it hard, though. Terrified that they were going to lose her, they spent the whole time thinking she was going to die. maggie's and the counselling they were able to give helped the family to be able to take each day as it comes and enjoy every day.

Teresa's about to have her first annual check-up after the cancer going into remission. She tells me she's 50-50 at the moment, but the longer she goes without a relapse, the better her chances will be.

Whether or not you believe in life after death, there's one thing we all have in common: we're all, sooner or later, going to kick the bucket. But it's only when loved ones - especially loved ones who are so young - have a brush with death that you're forced to sit down and think about it. I really want to help Teresa and other maggie's users.

I recently heard maggie's described as

"like coming in out of the cold and sitting in front of a warm fire in your favourite armchair"

Teresa lives in Nottingham, but the maggie's centre she and her husband visited is way over in Edinburgh. Every penny that you can give will go towards creating a new maggie's centre in Nottingham. They rely entirely on donations to operate and don't get any money from the NHS.

Well, a new maggie's centre sounds good to me.

And it doesn't stop there. Oh no. When you donate and make a commitment to the Shockingly Super Run 4 Glory 2009 you also get -- as an added and completely free bonus -- the comedy gold of seeing me injuring myself in imaginative ways for the next six months. Now that's what I call value for money.

So whaddya think? Are we going to do this thing, or what?!

Donating through this site is secure and also the most efficient way to sponsor me: maggie's will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your donation.

So anything you can give will make me love you just that little bit more. Not as much as I love my angelic (and terrifyingly scary) other half or Halle Berry, obviously, but I'll be very fond of you indeed.

Any that's not all. My business blog at www.daniboy.com/blog features regular injury updates. That's got to be worth a look, as you sit comfortably and without wincing at your PC.

Thanks for anything you can give.
