My story

"For many years it has been a dream of mine to climb a big mountain. Stand on the summit, look down and feel humbled by how small the world looks so far below."

This year I will finally have that opportunity when I travel to Chamonix in September 2011, to attempt to summit Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest mountain at 4810m (15,782ft).

With this being a huge personal achievement and, not to mention, a physical challenge like I have never experienced before I have decided to try and use this motivation to help raise some funds for Guernsey’s Pink Ladies, a charity which supports local women with breast cancer.

A man, raising money for a breast cancer awareness charity - that's an unusual thing, I hear you say? Well my story behind raising money for the Pink Ladies stems from personal experience, of seeing family members having to cope with and fight this terrible illness.

In the past 10 years both my mother and mother in law have fought and, fortunately, are winning the fight against breast cancer. Having seen what both of them have had to go through in an emotional and physical manner, I was moved by the emotional, practical and financial support that the Pink Ladies give to the women of Guernsey.

Just recently my wife’s grandmother has also sadly been diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment, along with several other family friends and acquaintances. The more I become aware of the illness the more I am alarmed by how many people’s lives are, in some way, affected by it.

It is for this reason that I am trying to raise money for the Pink Ladies. Both as a thank you, for all the support they have given to my immediate family and as a way of helping the Pink Ladies provide the ongoing ability to give someone else their support and friendship when they need it most.

Visit: http://www.pinkladies.org.gg/achievements.htm for more information about the types of support the Pink Ladies have established to date.

So please help me reach my target for The Pink Ladies and think of me when I’m stood, on the summit, in -20°C temperatures, for fun!
