Hi
On July 10th, Nick Ainscough, Keith Fullick, Alex Deacon and I will be cycling from St David’s in Wales to Lowestoft on the east coast of England. These two locations are the furthest points west to east across the British Isles(excluding Ireland). We estimate that the total distance will be approximately 450 to 500 miles (depending on the route we take and if we get lost along the way) we aim to complete the journey in 5 days and return home from Lowestoft on Friday 15th of July.
The aim of the bike ride is to raise money for cancer research UK.
Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. They have saved millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.
Every year Cancer Research UK spends hundreds of millions of pounds on research into diagnosing, preventing and treating cancer. They are the biggest single independent funder of cancer research in Europe, supporting the work of more than 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK.
Rather than focusing on one type of cancer, they fund research into a wide range of cancers. From the most common – such as breast, bowel, lung and prostate cancers – to rare types of tumor, we support groundbreaking science that brings benefits to all people with cancer.
Today around 290,000 people are newly diagnosed with cancer each year. The overall cancer death rate continues to fall but cancer still causes one in four deaths every year.
Breast cancer survival rates continue to improve – these days nearly three-quarters of people diagnosed will survive their disease for 10 years or more.
Lung cancer incidence rates in men have dropped by 14% since the year 2000 alone. The female lung cancer rate is still increasing slightly, but the increase has slowed down, having risen by about 20% in both the 70s and 80s, but only increased by 1 per cent since the year 2000. Both these patterns reflect smoking trends of 20 to 30 years ago.
Bowel cancer survival rates have more than doubled since the 1970s. Now around half of patients diagnosed survive their disease for 5 years or more.
The group has discussed how much we would like to raise and have agreed that a four figure sum would be great for our first go, although we accept that times are hard and will welcome any donation, no matter how small. We plan to raise further money by completing cycle rides such as “Lands End to JOG” in 2012 and have also discussed crossing the Channel and tackling one of the routes used in the “Tour De France.” I anyone would like to join us on any of our rides, including “Coast to Coast 2011” you would be more than welcome.
I will update the page as often as I can with news of how the training and fund raising is going.
All that is left for me to say is “no donation is too small, as every penny counts”
Thanks for looking
Dan
