We work through volunteers to bring about lasting change

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

In spring 2014 I will be volunteering for 3 months in India with VSO ICS. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to help improve the lives of some of the poorest people in the world.

ICS is a UK government-funded development programme that brings together 18 to 25-year-olds from all backgrounds to fight poverty in overseas and UK communities.

 I will have the chance to work alongside local volunteers in country and make a contribution to fighting poverty as well as gaining skills. As I will be living and working in the community I will be immersed in their culture and way of life. I'll work alongside local volunteers, tackling problems together and sharing valuable knowledge about how to get things done and how to make our achievements sustainable. This way, we can fight poverty together in the long-term.

The ICS programme will:

-           Develop 14,000 young people as active citizens

-           In the UK, there will be 7,000 new advocates for international development;

-           In some of the poorest countries in the world there will be 7,000 young people whose potential as community leaders will be enhanced

-           Combined there will be a dynamic global network of young people who know the potential of working across cultural boundaries to deliver positive change.

Fundraising is a vital part of the ICS journey and experience. All volunteers are asked to fundraise – I don’t have to pay for any of my costs but I have been tasked to raise at least £1500 before I go.

Fundraising is not only about raising funds. It helps me learn and develop lots of new skills which I can use overseas and when I am home, helps me to learn more about ICS and how to explain it to others and it shows commitment.
