UPDATE 23/11/09 FOR THE THIRD TIME THE TARGET I SET HAS BEEN EXCEEDED. EVERYONE WHO HAS GIVEN HAS BEEN EXTREMELY GENEROUS. MAYBE WITH YOUR HELP CAN WE MAKE IT TO £1000?
STOP PRESS- 5/11/09-TARGET REACHED- We have passed the £700 mark. Once again very many thanks for your generosity. But please continue to donate. I have raised the target from £700 to £850 because I hope to use the extra funds to pay for some tutoring for students who need it. These include those from the former Soviet Union and France to enable them to learn Hebrew, Jewish and Israeli history and customs, and strengthen other academic subjects, all designed to help prepare for high school matriculation exams and future service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
STOP PRESS 14/10/09- wow everyone has been so generous so far! I have therefore increased my target to see if together we can raise enough for two pairs of tefillin. Now read on....
In July 2009 I was very fortunate to visit Boys Town Jerusalem and have a tour round it.
Boys Town Jerusalem is situated on an 18 acre campus in Bayit Vegan, Jerusalem. Over 800 Jewish boys, aged between 12-20 study, pray and in many cases live there. Most of these boys come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, broken homes or from families devastated by bomb or missile attacks. I was amazed by the facilities and saw how happy the boys felt there. I know that most of the pupils at Boys Town have not been as fortunate as myself to have had a happy and secure childhood, and I decided that I should do something to help.
As I am coming up to my Bar-Mitzvah I would like to donate a pair of tefillin to be given to a Boys Town pupil the same age as me for his Bar Mitzvah.
To raise this money I will be doing a 13 mile walk crossing 16 Thames bridges starting at Hammersmith Bridge and finishing at Tower Bridge. I will be doing this on Sunday 6 December.
Please sponsor me so together we can make a special difference to a boy’s life as he becomes a man. Hopefully this will be an experience that the recipient and I will remember for the rest of our lives.

Other boys emigrate to Israel, often without their families solely to study at Boys Town. Many of these boys come from countries where anti-Semitism is rife and look towards Boys Town as a 'home' where their lives will be enriched. Boys Town Jerusalem's slogan is "we turn young boys from limited backgrounds into young men with limitless futures." No student is ever turned away from Boys Town due to inability to pay tuition fees.
