Having failed to make it to the starting line of the 2007 London Marathon (due to either shin splints or lethargy depending on who you believe), I've decided on a new challenge that I can attempt (mostly) sitting down:
On 30 July this year I'm setting off to travel from Brighton to Paris by bike (via the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry) to raise money for Sussex based charity The Argus Appeal.
The Argus Appeal's objectives are to relieve sickness, poverty, hardship and to provide benefits for lonely, needy old people and underprivileged children and other persons considered appropriate by the trustees in the Sussex area. (Charity Registration No 1013647)
The trip will involve cycling around 50 miles a day for 3 days (plus a bit extra getting to Newhaven from Brighton).
Whilst it's true that I can sit down for most of the way, in order to make the trip a bit more challenging I'm planning on using a track bike. i.e. a bike with just one gear and with a fixed-wheel - which means if the wheels are moving so are the pedals. Which means no coasting (even when going downhill)!
All costs of the trip are met by a combination of me and the event sponsor, Legal & General. Administration costs are met by The Argus newspaper group. All money raised will be used by the Argus Appeal to help those in need.
I'm aiming to raise over £500 in sponsorship for this worthwhile cause. If you feel able to sponsor me your contribution would be very gratefully received - both by me and even more so by the many people the charity helps.
Many thanks for your support,
Dan
