240 / 24 - London to Cornwall in a day · 10 July 2008

When the sun goes down the working day ends for millions of people without electricity. At the flick of a switch, lives can be instantly changed with a solar light. SolarAid wants to make real, sustainable change happen.

Story

On 26th July, we successfully completed our challenge of cycling the 240 miles from London to Cornwall in 24 hours.

You can see pictures of our journey here:

...and read Alec's account of the day on his website:
http://www.alec.fitzsimmons.com/LongRide.htm

We started from Alec's parents' house in Fleet, and cycled 240.6 miles to Fowey, roughly via Winchester, Salisbury, Chard, Honiton, Exeter, Dartmoor, and Liskeard. The journey took us exactly 21 hours - starting at a bleary 3 am, and rolling in to Fowey on adrenaline alone at midnight.

We had excellent conditions - very hot in the middle of the day, but no rain, virtually no wind, and happily not a single puncture.

I think we'd all agree that it was fun and rewarding, but extraordinarily challenging: in total we climbed 4,950 metres, and by the second half of the ride each of us had moments on the hills where it felt like we were going backwards. Getting through this was down to a mixture of teamwork and stubbornness, as well as help from our fantastic support team Iain and Anna, to whom we are completely indebted.

We're also really pleased to have raised 5,000 pounds (and counting) for Solar Aid, which we hope will make a real difference to their work. This site will remain open for donations for another few weeks, so if you haven't had a chance to donate and would like to, we'd be very grateful.

Thank you, once again, for all your support.

Dave, Ady, Chris and Alec.
