September Training Update

On the last weekend in August we were in the lake district for some serious Everest Training!

The week before Anna was gutted to find she'd injured her ankle, and when she was still hobbling around on Friday it was looking unlikely that she’d be able to do any walking at all at the weekend.  Fortunately those bags of peas worked miracles, and armed with bandages and walking poles she set off with everyone else on Saturday morning.

After a bright and early start on Saturday our guide launched us straight up one of the highest mountains in England – it wasn’t quite Everest, but it was bloody steep!  Despite the blustering winds near the top, our guide decided it was the perfect spot for a picnic, so we crammed on all the clothes and silly hats we had and scoffed our sandwiches as quickly as possible!  After another scarily steep climb we reached the summit at 931 metres, where we were surrounded by winds that nearly blew us over and wrapped in clouds, so we took a few photos and headed quickly on.  We took the long route down, with the promise of tea and cakes spurring us on, but after 11.7 miles and over 7 hours of walking the teashop closed before we arrived – NOOOOO!  Dave was also now in agony from his boots rubbing on his ankle, so we headed straight to the pub for some TLC.  Then for a curry and more beer before collapsing into bed.

On Sunday morning, Dave’s ankle was so swollen and bruised he couldn’t put on his boots, but he bravely put on some trainers and plodded on with us for a rainy day of walking!  Our guide found us another perfect picnic spot in a forest in the rain – apparently it was ‘sheltered’!  We carried on walking despite the constant downpour, and with another 9 miles under our belt, congratulated ourselves at the end with a huge ice cream.

We ended the weekend with sore ankles and aching muscles we didn’t know existed, but feeling motivated for the last 2 months of training and better prepared for the huge challenge ahead!

Why support us?

When we were choosing CWS’s 2nd charity trek, taking part myself was far from my mind when we selected the biggest challenge of all: climbing to the base camp of the highest mountain on earth, where temperatures fall below freezing with lows of -10 degrees!  But having seen for myself the fantastic projects CWS has in Nepal, I am fully committed to raising as much as I can for them, no matter how much pain it causes me!  However, I have no idea how I later convinced Dave to join me…

• We’ll be trekking for 6-9 hours every day, up and down mountains that make Brecon Beacons look like the desert

• We’ll be exchanging hot showers for lukewarm bucket washes, and flush toilets for longdrops

• At the end of a long hard day trekking, the thing we will want most in the world is a nice cold beer or a glass of wine to relax and soothe our aching muscles, but even this we will be deprived of as alcohol is banned during the trek due to the altitude!

Luckily at the end we’ll be visiting the projects, and having seen them for himself, I’m sure Dave will feel that all the pain was worthwhile.  (and if not, I’m in BIG trouble!)

Why Nepal?

Nepal is the least developed country in Asia, with years of conflict worsening the poverty.

Out of every 100 children in Nepal:
42 live below the poverty line
48 will be malnourished
42 will be involved in child labour
39 will not complete primary education
7 will die before their 5th birthday

Please sponsor us to help support these children, and before you decide how much, please think about what you spent on your last night out, your last shopping spree, or your last weekend away, and give as generously as you can.  We are covering the full trip costs ourselves, so every penny you donate will go directly to CWS.

How your donation could help:

£5 could help educate a child, by providing them with school books for 1 year

£10 could provide medical help for a child living in a remote mountain community

£25 could prevent health problems and accidents associated with traditional stoves, by building an improved cooking stove for a family in Nepal

£40 could provide protection and safety for a girl at high risk of abuse, by paying for an emergency home for a month

£50 could mean a street child no longer has to go hungry, by buying them a meal every day for a year

£100 could give a disadvantaged young person a new start in life, by paying for a month’s vocational training

£250 could help treat patients and save lives, by paying the salary of a doctor for a whole month

We’ll be posting updates on our fundraising and training progress here, so please come back and visit our page again soon!  Thank you so much for your support!
