(About the trip)
We are heading off to Malawi for a month on the 23rd July, to stay and work with a charity called Starfish. They have asked us to help train some Malawian teachers in basic computer skills, so that they can begin to pass on these skills to children and others in their schools and communities. One of the biggest blocks to computer training in many parts of the world is access to electricity, over this coming year Starfish is planning to partner with other relevant charities to roll-out solar panels to several of the schools they work with in Malawi, which benefits the schools in several ways, but makes the chance for long term computer training a reality.
One of Starfish's educational aims is to further develop a schools linking program that they have set up, linking 53 Malawian schools with schools in the UK. It provides opportunites for teachers, children and communities in both countries to collaborate and learn from each other. We hope that our training will help to increase understanding for teachers and students of what can be achieved using technology and at the same time make contact between the schools much easier, so that children both in Malawi and the UK can benefit.
We decided to run a half-marathon to raise sponsorship to help fund our trip, and if you're on this page then you probably know us fairly well, and know that neither of us have ever run anywhere near that far before! We've been training for a while, and are going to attempt the run on 6th July, watch this space as to whether we both survive it!
We estimate the basics of our trip to come to around £1600 each, and hope to fundraise as much as possible. Any amount, no matter how small, will be very gratefully received. If we manage to raise more than enough to cover the basics of our trip then the money will go straight to help the work that Starfish are doing. So please donate what you can! Thanks :-)
