Story
On September 7th 2008 I'm taking part in an Ironman Triathlon in aid of the British Skin foundation (with half proceeds going to the charity pool for UK Rotary club supporting other worth while causes). The event has a 9 -> 17 hour completion time, with 1500 competitors setting off together for a 2.5 mile Swim, 112 mile cycle and a 26.2 mile run to finish. [http://iron.ironmanuk.com]
The British Skin Foundation (BSF) is the only UK charity dedicated to skin disease research. Aiming to help the eight million people in the United Kingdom with a serious skin condition, the BSF works closely with many of the country’s leading dermatology departments and patient support groups. There are 200 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every day in the UK, and melanoma is rising faster than any other type of deadly cancer. In as many as 4 out of 5 cases, skin cancer is a preventable disease - by taking care in the sun.
Many people who have experienced skin cancer are keen to raise money for research into their specific disease. In response to this, the British Skin Foundation has launched the Skin Cancer Appeal.
The reasons I'm supporting the British skin foundation; to raise awareness of the 3rd largest killer amongst young people and support my Mothers work in dermatology and the detection, prevention and care for patients with malignant melanomas.
I was first enticed to do the Ironman by a GS friend who's trained for the last two years to compete in a similar event. I - unfortunately am in a slightly different position. Having never swum over 800m, run more that 5-6 miles or cycled further than work and back prior to 2008!
So my reason for emailing is a request to donate money to the BSF/Rotary cause, and give me something to run for when I get onto the final leg of the competition.
