Story

Hello my Name is Dave, I am a carers assessment and support worker based within the STEP Team.

I have a little bit of a reputation for fundraising for carers ... ok that may be a little modest.. HUGE reputation maybe more fitting!!

I am very passionate about the support I provide to the families of STEP and would like to provide a little bit extra so that we can recognize the fantastic support our families and carers provide to their loved one's who are  experiencing psychosis.

What does STEP stand for?
Somerset Team Early intervention Psychosis.

What’s psychosis?

Psychosis is a mental health problem that causes people to perceive or interpret things differently from those around them. This might involve hallucinations or delusions, which can cause severe distress. Psychosis can happen to anyone and affects 1-3% of the population, which is higher than diabetes in young people.

Carers are at risk of experiencing difficulties with their own mental health and experiencing what is known as carer burnout/Fatigue.
Often Carers will share that their loved one is unwell and that they don’t recognize the person that they have become. Families and carers have expressed that they experience similar feelings to grief as they feel they have lost their loved one, this can be extremely distressing.

What would I like to achieve?
I would like to create a wellbeing day by providing relaxation sessions, workshops and create a much needed day to relax.
Other monies raised will go towards days out and running costs of the monthly carers groups.
By doing the above I am enabling carers to have the opportunity of meeting with one another and a safe confidential space to share their stories and share coping strategies and provide peer support to one another and minimize the risk of isolation and also Providing an opportunity to gain an understanding of their loved ones experiences.

How do I plan to achieve my Goal?
I Plan to organize several fundraising events for example, Raffles, cake sales, I may do a sponsored something!! I have no idea what yet!!

If you would like to support my fundraising idea please do get in touch, your support will be very much appreciated

Are you organizing an event,  run a marathon, a sponsored something ...... but haven’t decided on a good cause yet??.... How about us!!
