Story
I will be taking part in the Round the World Clipper Race 2009-2010, which as a complete sailing novice will be an extreme challenge. I will be involved in the 5,100+ mile leg from Australia to China via Indonesia which will take between 5 and 6 weeks, and will involve sailing through a wide range of conditions, including tropical heat and near arctic conditions. I am told that the professional Volvo race sailors found my leg the most difficult and everyone involved in the race keeps asking me why I am doing that leg!
I had never sailed before but have now completed 21 days of training, with another 5 days sail planned before the race starts and a further 7 days navigation training ; hopefully I will know what I am doing when I get on board the 68 foot Clipper.
I am raising money for Cancer Research, a charity close to my heart. It is estimated that 1 in 3 people will be directly affected by cancer in their lives, and I am, certain that most of you will know someone who has been affected and will understand why it is such an important charity.
All of the cost of training and the cost of the berth on board the boat has been kindly met by Leisure Property Services, so every penny that you donate goes directly to Cancer Research. I really hope you will be able to donate something to this really worthwhile cause.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Cancer Research UK gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
