On April 17th 2011 Martin and David Stiles will be running the London Marathon in aid of Sparks, The Childrens Medical Research Charity.
David's Son William was born on 24th March 2009 but unfortunately suffered from a lack of oxygen during birth and had to be resuscitated as soon as he was delivered, he was immediately sent to the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit. Within an hour William started to suffer from seizures indicating that the lack of oxygen had caused brain damage and so it was decided that he would have cooling treatment, where his body temerature was reduced by 3 degrees celcius for 72 hours to try and limit the effects of the brain trauma and stop any further harm being done. William spent almost 4 weeks in intensive care after suffering further complications including septicemia pneumonia.
The cooling treatment that Willliam recieved only became general practice in this country in October 2008 and as of 2011 is internationally recognised as the way to treat brain damaged newborn babies. The research was funded by Sparks and carried out at St Micheal's Hospital in Bristol.
Thankfully William is now fast approaching his 2nd birthday and showing no signs of any mental or physical problems.
Sparks provide funds for research into all aspects of paediatric medicine and their aim is that all children should be given the best possible chance of being born safely and being able to live a full and normal life. In William's case they have achieved this and as a family we will always be grateful for the service that they have provided.
Thank you for your support
