On April 13th I will be running the 2008 London Marathon to raise money for Scannappeal.  I have been training hard to cover the 26.2 miles in around 3.5 hours, so I hope you will take my attempt seriously and donate generously to Scannappeal! All money raised from the run will go towards Scannappeal's Cancer Fighting Fund. Our first funding priority for this Appeal is for equipment for the early detection of lung cancer.  The sad but stark facts about lung cancer are:

- Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men in the UK.

- Following diagnosis 20% of lung cancer patients survive 1 year, and only 5% survive 5years.

In part this is because lung cancer is not detected early enough when treatment may be more effective.

I am a consultant respiratory physician at Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals and see many patients each year suffering from lung cancer and other chest diseases, such as tuberculosis and emphysema.  This specialist equipment, which is not routinely available at many hospitals, will mean tumours and lymph glands, which cannot usually be seen, can be more easily identified for biopsy.
