Kilimanjaro Climb September 2008 · 1 April 2008

We are an international horse charity that strives to improve the lives of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in the UK and throughout the world. We support the horse-human partnership in all its guises, using care, research, education and influence.

Story

As a new recruit to World Horse Welfare, I have seen with my own eyes the involvements of our charity.  I have experienced that "Rollercoaster Ride" of mixed emotions, elation and utter sadness.

The image adjacent is of Inca, a 17 year old 16.1hh Chestnut Mare. Inca  is currently being lunged and long reined in preparation for ridden work. Inca was part of an RSPCA Prosecution Case and arrived at Hall Farm in September 2006. Inca, along with 6 other horses were found living on a mud patch with no grass, hay or water.  Her previous owner was found guilty of neglect and was ordered to pay costs and had a 3 month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.  I am lucky enough to have spent time with this beautiful, special, horse.

11 horses from the dreadful welfare case in Buckinghamshire have come into our care since my joining.  This case has shocked all of us.  It is not an isolated case, sadly multiple welfare cases are all too common.

In this very brief note of my first few weeks at World Horse Welfare, I have been inspired to push myself to the limit.  I have decided to raise money for World Horse Welfare by climbing Kilimanjaro.  The highest mountain in Africa, the highest free standing mountain in the world. No other mountain in the world defeats people more easily than this because of the altitude attained in a relatively short space of time.  The odds are stacked against me with the success rate for climbing this mountain standing at ONLY 32%.

My training started last month.  The girls at World Horse Welfare keep me on track by screaming support from the office windows of the fundraising department as I jog round the paddocks!   When the last thing I feel like doing is running in the dark and rain there is always a World Horse Welfare honey spurring me on not to mention the centre's rehabilitation horses watching me and wondering what on earth I am doing!

If you would like to make a donation, World Horse Welfare would be truely grateful.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: World Horse Welfare will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
