In May 2008, a team of 15 of us from the Dunfermline Building Society and our network colleagues will be swapping our laptops for hard hats when we head to Africa. We will be spending one week in Malawi from 24 May to 1 June 2008, helping to build houses with Habitat for Humanity as part of a Global Village team. We will be working side-by-side with local people to help them build simple, decent homes. They will then buy their house at cost with an interest-free loan.A typical village hut is made of mud walls, has a dirt floor and thatched roof requiring frequent repair. Leaky roofs make damp housing and mud floor attracts rodents, insects and intestinal parasites. We will be based in an urban project in the capital, Lilongwe. This project is allowing families to move out of slum housing. More information on the project in Malawi can be found at http://www.habitat.org/eca/build/ame/123.aspx Habitat for Humanity's mission is to eliminate substandard housing worldwide and is currently building one house every 23 minutes. Please support us in this challenge! Peter Weanie, Gordon & Angela Campbell, Kathryn Smith, Mhairi Cruikshank, Alan & Jo Hobbett, Laura Hunter, Avril Gill, Mark Russell, John Wilson, Euan Ramsay, Patrice & Fiona Fabien and Grant Ager.
LATEST UPDATE!!! After a fantastic team effort with everything from a sponsored long distance cycle to hosting a chinese buffet, racing night, river cruise and various corporate dinners and events, our fundraising target has been impressively met. We now hope to have enough excess to pay for the bricks and mortar for a further 10 habitat houses, how cool is that?
