East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has three children’s hospice care services based at Milton in Cambridge, Quidenham in Norfolk and Ipswich in Suffolk, which also serves North Essex. EACH is a registered charity that relies on public support for approximately 72% of their required income of around £5.8million a year – this amounts to nearly £11,500 a day from voluntary donations.,p>There are an estimated 23,500 children in the UK who are not expected to reach adulthood. Caring for a child or young person with a life-threatening illness, often for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, can put a huge strain on family life. Life can become governed by the timetable of nursing and medical needs. Careers may have to be put on hold, healthy brothers and sisters can feel left out and regular family activities and holidays can be rare. During all of this, families are going through a process of grieving.

EACH’s three multi-disciplinary care teams help local children with life-threatening conditions and complex healthcare needs, and their families with the emotional and physical challenges they face, helping them to make the most of life. They welcome the whole family for a short break together or time to themselves in a home-from-home environment or in the comfort of their own home.

My story

For those of you that don't already know on 24th October 2009, Jason (On the left - mysteriously known to most as Taylor) and Chris (on the right - known to most as Ponty) will be mounting bicycles and pedalling across the notorious Death Valley in an attempt to raise as much money as possible for East Anglia's Children's Hospices (E.A.C.H.)

This would be a mammoth task even for a seasoned cyclist, but we both openly admit that 'seasoned' is certainly not a word that could be used to describe our cycling abilities. In fact just a few weeks ago we were complete beginners! But we've both been working our socks off and will be pushing ourselves to our physical limits by spending 4 days cycling across a desert with temperatures hitting 100 degrees and climbs of over 3500 feet – not to mention the population of coyote and mountain lion!

The only thing that could possibly make something like this worthwhile is knowing we'll be making a huge difference to the lives of children with life threatening conditions, children that may never experience all of the things we take for granted as adults

We're organizing this event ourselves, the equipment, the tents, the Vaseline (Vaseline for chapped thighs rather than the long lonely desert nights) the celebratory steak when we reach our goal and the medical assistance if we don't! With your help we can smash through our target of £5000 to help those wonderful children at EACH.
