Vietnam to Cambodia Cycle Challenge · 9 January 2013

Teens Unite supports young people fighting cancer to live their best life, while others search for a cure. We inspire young people to recognise their potential now and in the future and empower them to live every moment to the full.

Story

The challenge is a total of 470km or 292 miles, which is approximately from Hertfordshire to Newcastle!

Our journey begins in the fast paced city of Ho Chi Minh, which we leave behind for the quieter roads to the Cu Chi Tunnels. Crossing through to Cambodia we will cycle through Phnom Penh, before we embark on an in-depth cycle of the renowned complex of Angkor.

The most challenging aspects of this trip will be not only the endurance needed for 7 days cycling (covering 95km some days) but also the heat and humidity.

Charity: Teens Unite aims to help young people build on their self esteem and self confidence and reduce feelings of isolation by taking them on fun days out such as concerts, football matches and motivational workshops.

Teens Unite have also just opened the first respite care centre for young people aged 13 - 24 in the UK. It is located at 99 High Road in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire.

What makes Teens Unite unique is that the charity supports teenagers through treatment and beyond, for as long as they or want the support.

We recently asked our teens to fill in a questionnaire about the charity. One teen said that "Teens Unite is the light in a dark room". This powerful quote is motivating the team throughout their training.

Why: My motivations behind the challenge:

“I decided that I wanted to take on a few challenges to celebrate turning 50 this year. The first challenge was reaching 50! and once that was accomplished early in the year I set about completing my second challenge which has been 6 years in the making; to get the respite home for the charity. I am delighted that the house is now up and running and providing a much needed break for teenagers and their families who are faced with a life limiting diagnosis. My third challenge was to raise funds so that more teenagers can come and stay at the house and benefit from the respite care”.

“This is where the Vietnam to Cambodia challenge came in as the Olympics inspired me to get fit and I find cycling is a great stress relief. Having recently lost my beloved Dad, Charlie Edridge a Hoddesdon resident his whole life, on the 8 September, I now feel even more determined to complete this challenge for our teenagers and to make Dad proud”.

In advance, THANK YOU for donating! Your contribution really will help us to help more teenagers and fulfil our mission to make their struggle that little bit easier :)
