Church Action on Poverty is a Christian social justice charity, committed to tackling poverty in the UK. We work in partnership with churches and with people in poverty themselves to find solutions to poverty.

Story

This is a critical time to stop the plague of high-cost credit in our communities. We need your help now – it is the best opportunity for a decade to deal with the legal loan sharks.

Why now?
The ‘credit crunch’ and recession are hitting low-income households hardest. There is widespread anger at the greed of many banks and lenders, itself one of the root causes of the crisis.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) are doing an investigation into high-cost credit, so we have a chance to make sure the voices of people at the grassroots are heard.
And of course, the general election will happen within the next 10 months – politicians are looking for popular measures.

Unlike other national campaigns, Debt On Our Doorstep is a grassroots campaign network that is not funded or guided by large credit businesses or Government. Our strength is as a diverse, grassroots network of advice centres, local authorities, charities, credit unions, churches and others. But with very limited funds, it has sometimes been difficult to get our message across. And that is why we need your help to make a difference now.

What will we do with your donations?

We will bring international experts to the UK, informing the Government that interest rate caps in other countries are already working to protect the poorest borrowers from extortionate lending.
We will also pull together a serious lobbying and PR campaign that will get our message across to politicians, and translate this into commitments in their election manifestos.

We need to receive £10,000 over the summer in order to mount a campaign of this nature.
Please give what you can to help us make a difference.

Over the last decade we have made a tremendous impact on the problem of high-cost credit. With your support now, we can make the most of our best opportunity yet. Please help, if you can.
