The Spirit of Polar Exploration is still alive!
Dennis Woods and Alan Bussey are making final preparations for a skiing and dog sled expedition to the North Pole. They say:
"From our departure point of Longyearbyen high above the Arctic Circle, we will take a short flight to Ice Station Borneo approx 88 degrees north latitude on the frozen pack ice of the Arctic Ocean. Then we will set off for the North Pole, a distance of up to 150 miles accompanied by two experienced Arctic guides.
Dog sledding and skiing for up to 10 hours a day on the unmarked Arctic ice, we will encounter pressure ridges – giant boulder fields of ice as high as 2-storey houses - and large open water leads that expose the13,500 foot depths of the Polar Sea as well as the occasional Polar Bear! Camp each night will be on the unmarked and shifting ice. We will be prepared for weeks of unbroken cold - temperatures will range from zero to - 40 degrees F.
We expect to arrive at the North Pole on or around April 26th 2008."
Dennis and Alan have put together this fundraising web page on behalf of SSAFA Helping heroes and their Families!  This appeal is to support the recovery of badly injured servicemen returning from action abroad and who are stationed for long periods of time in rehabilitation units at either Selly Oak, Birmingham or Headley Court, Surrey.  Families are hard pressed to visit as often they live a very long way from these centres. SSAFA will provide accommodation close to the rehabiltation centres. Two large houses are in the process of being equipped to offer 'home from homes' to several families at a time in a supportive and understanding environment.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure - and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.  We are covering all costs so no expenses will be drawn from the funds raised.

Many thanks indeed!
