Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My wonderfully funny, loving and fiercely stubborn Grandma passed away four years ago. Despite loving life and fighting until the end, she suffered from Alzheimer's for several years before her death. It is heartbreaking to witness someone suffer from this cruel disease and also see the effect it has on family and friends.
My Grandma was a strong believer in living life to the full, doing the things you love and always having fun. She wanted me and her to go to New York for her 90th birthday on a girls' weekend, despite being barely able to walk! Therefore, it only seems right that I do what I love and get on my bike to raise money for a hugely important cause.
Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia. It is a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain, it is not one specific disease. There is no cure.
Currently there are more than 350,000 Australians living with dementia. In Ireland it's nearly 50,000 with more women than men suffering from the disease. The vast majority of people suffering from the disease are cared for by their family.
It's not just your memory that is affected, dementia affects your quality of life, your ability to think, communicate and do every day tasks.
Please help us raise money for this worthy cause - I'll pedal as fast as I can!
Thank you
