Day 1:
Cycle Florence to Radda in Chianti Approx. 65kms (hilly)
After a short uphill to Piazzale Michelangelo for a last beautiful view over the city of Florence we cycle south. We take a classic route along Impruneta and the famous Strada in Chianti, with its rolling hills,
passing? vineyards and olive groves. After lunch we make our way to Radda the historic capital of Chianti and one of its highest and most impressive towns. .
Day 2:
Cycle Radda to the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore Approx. 75kms (hilly)
After breakfast we’re back on our bikes cycling out of Radda towards the famous monastery of Monte Oliveto. There’ll be plenty of classic Tuscan villages en route today. If there is time, we’ll make a stop at the Castle of Brolio famous for its
wine and maybe a quick? taste. We continue our cycling towards Siena. After a nice lunch near the small town of Asciano, we gather strength for the last stretch to the hamlet of Chiusure and then downhill to our overnight stop at the world famous Abbey of Monte Oliveto.
Day 3: Cycle Monte Oliveto to Montepulciano via Montalcino Approx.
Today we will see some changes in scenery on the way to Montalcino. It becomes an open expanse of landscape with fantastic views over the 'Crete Senesi', typical limestone formations of the Siena area. After a long and tough uphill we reach Montalcino, famous for its Brunello wine. We will have an opportunity to taste this wine at the enoteca of the Fortress. Back on the bike in the direction of Pienza, a little town famous for the filming of the "English Patient". The last stretch is undulating and takes us to our overnight accommodation, located 5kms outside Montepulciano. We stay in a converted farmhouse which produces its own food and wine!
Day 4: Cycle Montepulciano to Castiglione del Lago, at Lago Trasimeno
On this, our last cycling day, we reach the Chiana plain; this is typical Umbrian country side. Umbria, known as the "Green Heart" of Italy is less hilly than Tuscany and boasts vineyard clad valleys, hillsides covered with olive trees and ancient walled cities. Close to Cortona, a beautiful little town on a hilltop. Then it’s a tough but rewarding 5kms uphill to Cortona, well worth the effort. After a visit, it’s downhill to our final destination, Lake Trasimeno; central Italy's largest lake. Here we enjoy our late lunch on the lake shore of Castiglione del Lago and the end of our bike ride. Any / every donation will be gratefully received by many children throughout the UK, don’t be shy!
