At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. We’ll face it all together – but we can’t do it without you. Visit www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk

Story

In October last year, worried about a growth under 13-year-old Emily Baker's chin, her mum (our good friend) Jo took her to the GP.

Within 48 hours they were sitting in a London teenage cancer ward where a two-and-a-half year treatment programme for Emily's just-diagnosed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia was being drawn up. Jo says "our world changed dramatically overnight. Emily and I went to the doctors down the road, and we did not come home from hospital in London for over 2 and a half weeks."

On her return from hospital, Emily, a keen netball player, ballet dancer and actress, was so weak and had such limited movement she had to use a wheelchair and sleep in a hospital bed in the family dining room.

She said: "That was the worst part. I lost all my muscle tone, and I hated not being able to get around on my own. I also lost my hair quite quickly due to the chemotherapy drugs, which was distressing. They give you drugs which are meant to cure you but they make you feel 100 times worse, so you have other drugs to make you feel better."

That was back in November and December and thankfully Emily has now reached the maintenance stage of her treatment.

They still have to be very careful as Emily is prone to infections, and does not have the energy levels she used to, but she is doing fantastically well. Her approach is to take it all in her stride.

CLIC Sargent care for children and young people with cancer as well as supporting their families and have been a great help to Emily and her family during this worrying time.

We wanted to give back something to the Charity for all the support that they have given. They have all been so courageous, especially Emily and therefore we decided to attempt another challenge.

The challenge is to complete the ascent and descent of the 3 highest peaks in Yorkshire. It involves climbing Pen y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough as part of a 23.5 mile circuit and this must be completed within 12 hours. The total ascent is 1,672 meters (5,485 feet) and will be a major achievement for the 3 of us to complete within the 12 hours.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page and please donate to help support our challenge and Emily.
