On the 12th July we intend to run the 97 miles of the St Oswald’s Way footpath (www.stoswaldsway.com) in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. We will cover the distance over three consecutive days, and to put this into perspective that's over 32 miles each day or approximately 3.7 marathons. The route follows the path by which St Oswald, a King of Ancient Northumbria, led his Army to defeat invading forces. The route will take us from Lindisfarne (Holy) Island, across the causeway to the mainland. We then make our way south towards Hadrian’s Wall, which we follow to our finishing line at Heavenfield near Hexham. We expect to be thoroughly exhausted but hopefully we will have raised lots of money to donate and this should ease our pain! We will be raising money in aid of The Bobby Robson Cancer Foundation (www.sirbobbyrobsonfoundation.org.uk). For those of you who don't know, the 75 year old former England and Newcastle United manager has refused to give in to cancer an astonishing five times. He is still fighting 15 years after his first diagnosis and is currently undergoing chemotherapy for tumours in his lungs.
Sir Bobby's goal is a campaign to support the new Early Cancer Trials Unit at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, currently being built at the Freeman Hospital (Newcastle upon-Tyne) and to be named The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre. The money is urgently needed to fully equip the unit with treatment rooms, a state-of-the-art laboratory, consulting rooms and offices.
