Our donkeys have big appetites!

Bruno eats on average 14-20% of his body weight each week. To keep our donkeys healthy and warm, each one needs an enormous one tonne of straw a year. This is one of our main expenses and obviously one of the most important as good food and bedding is vital for keeping donkeys like Bruno healthy and happy.

Bruno came to the Sanctuary in 2002 along with dad, Barney. He was facing an unsure future when his owner could no longer provide for his needs. Bruno had trouble eating and was losing weight at an alarming rate.

Our vets discovered that Bruno's teeth were causing him pain and making it almost impossible for him to eat. He now has his teeth filed regularly by our dentist and, although still a rather timid donkey, he is now fit and healthy with an appetite to match!

As the seasons change, so do the diets of our residents. Straw remains an important component throughout the year, though, as it helps to maintain a balanced diet, providing fibre and roughage. During the summer months donkeys like Bruno spend more time out in the fields munching on grass and straw. As the weather gets colder the donkeys benefit from special winter feed, made up of straw and haylage (dried grass). This is where donations are a big help.

Last year our donkeys ate 2,120 tonnes of straw, costing over £100,000! And this doesn't take into account the many donkeys requiring special feed due to poor health or special dietary requirements. This is a great deal of money and with the unexpected floods over the summer, prices of straw and haylage are expected to rise.

We need your help to feed donkeys like Bruno, particularly through the winter months when it's too wet for grazing. Your donation, however large or small, will help us provide for the basic needs of the donkeys in our care.

Of course, we'll need to continue to provide feed and bedding for the thousands of donkeys in our care for donkeys' years to come. If you feel you can support us with a regular gift by banker's order, that would really help us plan for the future and help us ensure that donkeys like Bruno will continue to have the best possible care.

If you feel you can help us to continue to care for donkeys like Bruno we would be very grateful.

What your money could buy

£4 - one bale of bedding materials for our special donkeys
£16 - enough bedding for a donkey for a month
£20 - extra feeds for one donkey for one month
£60 - one tonne of straw, enough to feed a donkey for a year

How you can help

Any donation received, no matter how small, will be gratefully received. Your generous donation will be used to help us care for donkeys both here in the UK and worldwide.

On behalf of all the donkeys here at the Sanctuary, a big thank you.
