Story
Hello and welcome to my fundraising page!
We are often asked to give money to charities these days so I guess I should explain why I decided to do this challenge and why you should help me reach my target.
Many of us know someone who has suffered from cancer either as a patient, a loved one or a friend. Surprise, surprise I am no exception. I lost my Grandmother to bowel cancer when I was young, and more recently, my wife lost her mother to breast cancer. One encounter with this illness is enough, however, last summer we were once again plunged into crisis when my wife's younger sister was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Fortunately, this time we had a happy ending when finally she was pronounced all clear in March this year. Around the same time we got our good news, I watched a report on the news about a man who was terminally ill with cancer and was having to pay for drugs to buy him a bit of extra time and a less painful end. He was spending thousands of pounds of his savings - money which should be left to his family, to pay for treatment because the NHS claimed the drugs were too expensive. This left me sick. My wife's sister having to pay for anti-sickness drugs was bad enough. So I decided to do the honourable thing and risk my neck on Europe's largest and one of the world's most active volcanoes - well who wouldn't?
That is why I am doing the Etna challenge, and why you will hopefully sponsor me. The target is the minimum required to enter the challenge, and I would love to raise more. I am assured that whatever amount Marie Curie contributes towards care is matched by the government, so the more I can raise the more money will go to a deserving cause.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Marie Curie Cancer Care will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Many thanks for your support and if you hear of a British man dying on Mt. Etna on Sept 19th 2008 remember its how he would have wanted to go!!
