As-salâmu 'alaikum wa rahmatullâhi wa barakâtuhu,
"The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever".
Dearest family and friends, we’re sure that all of you have witnessed the latest devastating headlines of one of the worst droughts in a century, compounded by high food prices and unremitting politicalstrife, is spawning an immense humanitarian crisis on the Horn of Africa.
Thousands of Somalis are fleeing their homeland each week; most of those who survive the brutal journey end up in refugee camps in neighbouring Kenya. 10 million people are suffering amidst the worst drought in 60 years. Resources are woefully inadequate. Poverty has become extreme: children are dying of starvation, pregnancies are resulting in miscarriages and farmers’ livelihoods are being destroyed.
Many mothers along with their children say they have walked for a month on bare and bloodied feet to refugee camps in Kenya. Journeys of more than 300 miles are common. In their search for food and water, they have slept for weeks on burning sand under open skies.
"Desperate hunger is looming across the Horn of Africa and threatening the lives of millions who are struggling to survive in the face of rising food prices and conflict," World Food Programme executive director Josette Sheeran said in a release.
... And how many more brothers and sisters need to die before this Ummah wakes up?
Our collective aim is to raise as MUCH as we can with the help of our family and friends who we dearly love and respect. Please help us do this! There is no better month than the blessed month of Ramadan, in which your rewards will be multiplied, so dig deep and be assured that Families Relief will use 100% of the donation for those who are in desperate need of our help!
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah’s Messenger (SAW) as saying: “Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect; and the one who shows humility, Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).” (Muslim)
This is a very testing time for the drought victims, but let us not forget that in times of such calamity, it is a bigger test for the rest of the Ummah to see what we do to help our brothers and sisters in need within our means.
“That which you give in usury for increase through the property of (other) people, will have no increase with Allah: but that which you give for charity, seeking the Countenance of Allah, (will increase); it is those who will get a recompense multiplied.” (Qur'an, 30:39)
