Saving our special sand dune flora
Sand dunes may hold a special place in your heart – a holiday memory perhaps. But sadly we have to alert you to the perilous state of some of their specialist flora. As a supporter of Plantlife you are in a unique position to help – and we urgently need you to do so.
Sand dunes are complex, unstable systems that are naturally mobile, supporting a specialist flora that prefers the bare sand. However, the majority of the UK’s dunes have been stabilised, with devastating effects on their flora and other forms of biodiversity.
Special plants such as the pear-fruited bryum, long-leaved thread moss and cernuous bryum are all now extinct.
The exquisite pale yellow fen orchid (dune variant), and populations of dune mosses and liverworts such as petalwort are in critical danger.
Plantlife is launching an urgent rescue campaign. We will be working with landowners and land managers to deliver better wild plant conservation action on the ground. To do this as effectively as possible we need your help.
