Story

Summary

The community of Nacula in the Yasawa Islands, Fiji has access to only very basic resources with a severe lack of fresh water, power, nutritious food and education. This project will focus on helping the community to construct a kindergarten for children aged 2-5 and provide scholarships for older children to progress to high school.

Background

GVI began working with Nacula in response to a request to provide assistance in improving infrastructure and educational facilities. It quickly became clear that the community would benefit from both Kindergarten and secondary education. When children do complete their primary education further study requires leaving their community at great expense, usually out of reach for families. This means the majority of students do not have the opportunity to continue their education beyond primary school.

Project aims

We aim to provide education for children in Nacula both before and after primary school providing a well rounded education. Donations will fund the construction of a kindergarten in the community providing younger children with the chance to learn, play and receive care and attention every day in an appropriate environment. Upon completion of primary education we aim to fund scholarships allowing progression to secondary education.

Long-term sustainability

The benefits of a consistent education for children in the Yasawa Islands cannot be overstated and is vital in securing a prosperous future for the community. In addition the construction of the kindergarten will create jobs for qualified teachers whilst freeing up time for parents to work and bring in a consistent income for their family.
