Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

12 March 2010 - EGILSAY to ETHIOPIA - raising funds for CANCER RESEARCH UK

I travelled from my home on Egilsay approx 30m above sea level to some of the highest peaks in Africa

I'm back from what turned out to be  the most adventuresome and challenging trek so far!!!

The trip was billed as 'not for the faint hearted' and  far from the regular tourist trails. They were not wrong.

Guides and armed scouts took our group to the Simien Mountains Massif in the Northwest corner of Ethiopia, rising to the highest point Ras Dejen at 4620m. The West Plateau is bounded on the North and East by a massive escarpment many kilometres long and over 1000m high in places and is cut along its length by deep gorges. We summitted peaks of 3845m, 3926m, 4200m and 4430m.

We experienced food poisoning, chest infections, lost bags, one broken leg, terrific thunderstorms and had to push our minibus out of a mudslide. Ethiopia is a fascinating country with a big story to tell and well worth a visit.

We trekked through the Simien Mountains National Park which is primarily a wildlife sanctuary for endangered species such as the Gelada Baboon and Walia Ibex, both of which we sighted

The trek took place over several days mostly at altitude over 3600m wilderness camping and taking whatever weather the Simiens threw at us.

I took part  to raise money for  CANCER RESEARCH UK

You can view some photos on this page that will give you a taste of the Ethiopia trek -  Enjoy!
